We’ve shifted away from Blogger!

Shifting way from the Blogger ecosystem for now and going forward, CharadeSG is now up on this (somewhat) better website, with its challenges.

After four to five years of tolerating Blogger’s old-school and outdated code, CharadeSG is now on its independent address and on a more modern piece of code.

What you see here in the thumbnail and on the side is probably not final, especially if you’re reading this right after the migration was done. We’d like to add some of the elements that “age” the original website, included but not limited to readding the silly background canvas that Efini made at the inception of the website. Where the website currently exists is a bit too modern for us, so we may revert it in time.

Charade Archival is also now within this website, and should hopefully be a bit better to navigate compared to before.

For those interested, migrating over was both easy and not easy. Its not a free job either, as supported plugins for hosting on WordPress is somewhat limited in the field of migrating over from Blogger. Efini spent much sweat and tears to do the migration, and spent some (hopefully one-time) funds to make it happen. Indeed, it isn’t free.

We used one of the higher-rated importers that is free for Blogger sites with only twenty posts, but requires a 29USD-minimum monthly payment to import more than the stipulated amount.

Because of Blogger’s code being different than WordPress, the content outputted was less than desirable in how all posts were displayed, which forced us to fully redo the post history one to two times, with a few more for other problems.

This importer happily has an option to try to optimize the HTML code which has worked much better than not having the option for us. We strongly recommend using it if you are in a similar situation as us when we were importing over.

Another big problem was all photos were being compressed when automatically uploaded to WordPress. All photos were compressed to a 640px maximum pixel length / width. Editing of the plugin’s code was required to get past this, and a thumbnail generator plugin to ensure the website isn’t as laggy as loading all photos in maximum quality.

Manual uploads that did not come from Blogger were also affected and mostly locked to a similar bottleneck, which had to be fixed by introducing custom code via another plugin.

Please bear this in mind when using importers for use from Blogger to WordPress, as this can become a recurring issue, especially if you are picture-heavy like CharadeSG is.

More issues were had with themes supporting the format we were looking for, which can be fixed 50% of the time with custom shortcode and shortcode support. It is still a problem at time of writing, as we are working to fix certain widgets and other items in the website like the background we were referring to. Otherwise, it is possible, but it will be a week-long job, minimum.

Primarily, the plugin used to fix automatic compression when uploading photos and the Blogger importer are linked appropriately for your reference.
