Fuel for Thought: Scoring a ¥90,000 headunit for under ¥10,000

This Sony WX-7700MDX has now come under my wing for a big discount over market rates. It might need 2x the cost to bring it up to snuff though.
Whilst I was sourcing for parts for Trek, I came across a listing of a known halfcut workshop in Malaysia with a halfcut Airtrek in black in their stock. I know they would rightly price their Airtrek parts, but the “universal” parts, maybe? So I decided to shoot my shot and see what they replied.
The headunit in this halfcut isn’t original, but the Sony WX-7700MDX inside is very much worth a hefty amount.

You could imagine my shock that while they said they didn’t and wouldn’t test, the headunit was offered for RM200.
When these are constantly within the western eyes and rightly priced on Japanese auctions for roughly S$500 to S$1,500, it doesn’t not make sense to try luck, right?

The problem will fundamentally be whether it works or not. I bought it and it now sits as an ornament piece, because I am not in a rush to try it and I don’t have a car that accepts a double-din headunit.
The only car that could accept a double-din headunit is Trek – which already has an android player (which I would like gone but this decision will not win over my family who “uses” it) – and the Lotus and Honda both are single-din only.

I could convert the Civic with a double-din console, but thats not in the cards at the moment.
I am being recommended a shop in Selangor that is trained in repairing old headunits where I eventually plan to bring there to restore and to add Bluetooth functionality. The screen looks to have some wear that may impact visibility, so I will have to brace for the lacking condition if I choose to install it before restoring.
The RM-X110 remote sadly did not come with the headunit and is instead a Panasonic unit. Its also interesting even if it doesn’t match – it fondly reminds me of my limited times in Japan.
In any case, this will receive a possible future update if I do install it. For now, a cabinet ornament it will remain as, until funds and time gives the green light.
