Fuel for Thought: This low-priced Honda Civic EJ to think about

This local-assembly Honda Civic Saloon comes available for an affordable price tag.
Another day on Marketplace, and among the sea of rightly-priced Honda Civics comes along a very inexpensive option, such as this.
This is a Malaysian-assembled unit, with “redtag” Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plates and pre-facelift exterior parts. However, this car has been converted to the “EK99” look, which is the facelift Civic EK bodyparts.
This means revised front and rear lights and bumpers. There is special mention that the lights are Stanley-produced, which are worth a healthy amount in the world of Malaysian-residing Civic parts.
This car is an automatic with Malaysian-market faux wood inserts on the air vents in the interior, included with a broken speedometer – a common fault in Civics. The interior is very original – seen by the seats, doorcards, and more – except for the odd steering wheel cover which may be hiding long-term wear.
Engine is standard and paired with an automatic four-speed transmission. If this truly has VTEC, this 1.6-litre engine should be a D16Y8 with VTEC – the local-market VTi.
The VTi (and another lower-trim EXi) was available with the former being the highest in the range. It is the (likely only) trim offered with VTEC technology where official Malaysian Kah Motor Civics are concerned, priced at RM5,000 more than the 1.6-litre EXi trim. Also exclusively Included is Anti-Lock-Brakes (ABS).
At the price of RM4,800.. its a bit of a painful reminder how comparably inexpensive it is to play car across the border (viewing it with rose-tinted glasses and missing the point of including parking, repairs and more).
