SG Archives: Mercedes-Benz E280

Cross-shopping high-displacement executive cars at a time, and this E-Class E280 was a close contender five years ago!

Five years ago is so different compared to now in 2026. Seriously, the old things are (exaggeratedly but not far off) all gone and the country has literal boatloads of fresh new imports from the big nation up north. I’ll just say it; its feeling a lot more Chinese around here.

It is also true that the Chinese in Singapore do like their status, and before the emergence of new luxury brands from China, everyone and their grandfathers flocked to decades-defined marques from Europe. There was BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi (eventually) and Saab – alongside many other luxury brands and cars from many differing makers all over the globe.

But the former three are still holding on well enough these days (Saab has long lost its grip), and in the 1990s were they making a good splash specifically Mercedes, despite the discontinuation of the legendary W124-generation E-Class and W201-generation C-Class. The succeeding W210 and W202 respectively were good sellers even if quality slumped, still finding their way into the hands of towkays, though most of them still picked the bread-and-butter “200” specs. You know, just for status.

This isn’t one. This unit is a 2000-model year E280 Elegance, making use of a 2.8-litre M112.921 V6 engine producing 201 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque. The M112 V6 replaces the 2.8-litre M104 straight-six engine around 1997, which outputted about 190 horsepower and 270 Nm torque.

In Elegance trim, the W210 is a generally more comfortable package compared to the Avantgarde, which sports a firmer and lower ride height and cosmetic differences.

The Elegance came from factory with:

  • Blue-tinted glass (Avantgarde is green)
  • Halogen bulbs (Xenon for Avantgarde line)
  • Walnut burl wood interior trim (bird’s-eye maple for Avantgarde)
  • Trim-colored seatbelts (otherwise black)
  • Contrast exterior trim (Body-colored trim for Avantgarde)
  • Wood-accent steering wheel (Avantgarde is black only)
  • 10-spoke wheels (Avantgarde is 5-spokes)

The easiest way of telling will be the fender badge – though anyone could spoof it without knowing or caring. While these are the primary differences for European-spec W210s, the last two are an outlier for this car, which has a full-black steering wheel and the Avantgarde alloys.

Back in 2021, we were on the hunt for another car that would replace our Mitsubishi Lancer EX GLS, and were scouring for something more upmarket. Again, because status and all. We viewed two of three cars that were on sale. This E280 came as the first, and as much as we had high hopes for it…

When we test drove the old barge, there was a clunk when engaging reverse and unconvincing brakes. Plus the rear carpet or seats were moldy in select areas, so we gave it some thought. But nevermind giving it thought when the very next car we went to view was a Mercedes C-Class W204, which my family would be satisfied about that it was bought on the first viewing.

I remember being “livid” – in my own words – as I couldn’t differentiate between European trim levels then. As a “JDM fanboy”, I couldn’t differentiate trim levels and just called that C-Class “common”. Oh, how my knowledge has broadened since.

That C-Class was a C350, so it was 0.7-litres more in payable road tax but probably just as rare as the E280 in trim. There are possibly 4-5 C350 W204 in Singapore, and a similar number for the E280 W210, if not lower.

What became – instead of the common “What if” scenarios

Back to the E280; it was relisted for sale in September 2025, where it was presumably sold around December of the same year. Come around the next Cars ‘N’ Kopi (the last one held in New Bahru), and there she was again.

I was more keen on the E280 when we were viewing it over the C350 but it was based on perceived rarity. The C-Class is without question a better car, but our hearts were fawning over the E-Class more. That is until my tastes regressed a little and it looked really like an “Ah Peh Chia” (Uncle car).

At time of writing, it is owned by @yeo_financial_ruins, now on a set of AMG Aero II 2-piece Monoblock wheels. Much of the ownership experience is detailed in his page and the usual and unusual old car quirks and inconveniences. Skimming through, it seems that the E280 would have been a bit of a headache like the Lotus – probably for the better it didn’t fall into our hands!

Five years on and it is a small “what if”, though no longer with my hands tied with another European car. These are still plenty in neighbouring Malaysia, so its totally not far fetched to think about one over there, yeah?

"Forging my own path" or something. This path is supported by odd interests, concerning execution and (non-)conducive results. With a youngtime interest in automotive without conclusive mechanical knowledge years on, photography, writing and documenting cars is probably a coping mechanism. By the way, classic cars are a financial mistake - read more to know how.
