Oh, yeah. Quite okay. A fair way to celebrate National Day.
Its the usual catch-up session with friends.
As of writing, I have yet to even touch on the previous Cars ‘N’ Kopi event. Its another coverage so picture-heavy (the beauty of CnK) that this event is shot now primarily on video than the usual high-res picture-perfect stuff just so it doesn’t rot in my backlog.
Having opted to make my way starting 5:40AM and reaching 6:30AM, I’d been surprised that I weren’t the only car there. Say there were about four or five attendees already present, with exception of the guys and gals at Bentley.
Hosting as part of a showcase is Bentley – as stated before – with the highly exclusive Bentley Batur and new Continental GT.
Its not a brand-new car but it isn’t a run-of-the-mill towkay car either. Only 18 of the Batur have been made worldwide. An adjacent piece will be sorted for the big barge.
It’d be another busy day for Dempsey Hill. By eight, jams started. Duos and trios trickled in which seemed to comprise of newer enthusiast cars instead of a fine mix of old and new. There also seemed to be a higher influx of hugely modified cars that came in – no wonder the noise around was pretty evident with loud and crazy idles and the occasional burble from a light touch in revs.
Some companies opted to come and display their brand new cars too. Wearnes Automotive, whom brought along Bentley cars, had come along to present their Lotus Emira Turbo SE display car. KG Mobility (KGM, which is formally SsangYong) also brought along their display cars in the form of an interesting four-door Musso pickup and a Torres EVX.
I got to commend both the team at Bentley and KGM for setting up super early.
Hey, but another thing. The number of cars that were doing stupid s#&$ in the venue was awful. I cannot remember what cars were involved with the usual acts considered antisocial, but it spanned across perhaps five or so cars. What isn’t appreciated too were a handful of young videographers asking owners to rev. Its a social space, please tone it down and respect the venue, please.
What I remember most is a green matte wrap Lexus LC500 (color could have been misidentified) with a rear-mounted camera who was banging off the rev limiter. And a Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG who was doing numerous pulls at the same location. I will not comment on the description of those involved but they had done at least four runs – which a friend kindly informed me that one got close to hitting a passer-by.
I’m groggy and perhaps cranky no thanks to sleep deprivation. Thus I am not impressed – neither is the community.
Parking situation was alarming too. Double parking extended to the main straight which consisted of maybe six or more cars at a time. It would also make it the first time of my memory that the police were not just present, but responding to the event. Apparently the main reason for their presence is that there was a car meet.
Sounds vague, but its an alarming cause to investigate assuming the reason was literally just because there is a “car meet” happening. I don’t see any connotations of the term relating to public safety, but can we really be surprised given the hostile public stance these days? They were also enquiring about the parking situation, especially requesting the cars parked in the middle of the road to shift elsewhere.
To add insult onto injury, we had an accident with two friends because of the road being narrowed to fit the cars parked. The damage to both vehicles are superficial but worrying no less, especially should it happen with an attendee and non.
Hectic it was, its still a good opportunity to catch up with friends, though it was crowded and too large a venue to necessarily find everyone. I’m very tired but well worth the last-hour decision to prep and go.
