MY Archives: Proton Satria SE (Black Panther)

Striking off another Proton Satria SE with this GTi-kitted 1.3 manual!
In another mall in Penang is this little Proton Satria Special Edition.
I’ve been hunting for Special Editions out of pure curiousity, and found this black unit that looks worse for wear although in usable condition.
It seems like an non-enthusiast and half-baked effort to get the look of the Proton Satria GTi – the top-spec performance variant of the Mitsubishi-based Satria – with only the body kit done.

The 1.3-litre cars were offered only with the Black Panther paintwork, which this example has been heavily oxidized. The more desirable 1.5-litre cars were offered in the nicer Dandelion Yellow.
Interior changes between the 1.3 and 1.5 remain largely indifferent, with the same yellow-accent interior whose black plastic now matched the black paint. Also still intact were the 14-inch “mini-GTI” 6-spoke wheels that were exclusive to the 1.3 SE.
The black hatchback was also only offered with a manual transmission, meaning old-school fun over the three-speed automatic that the 1.5-litre was offered with. The 4G13 motor was more grunting than effortless, producing only 83 horsepower and 109Nm of torque, even though it was offered with a VDO fuel injection system over the carbureted variants in early Satria and Wira models.

The seats were also intact but the rest of the interior details were blocked by window shades. Value for these are also unknown to me but the 1.5M cars can be had for as low as MYR6,500. Would you skip perhaps a few thousand Ringgit to get the 1.3 or save it for a 1.5?
