Fuel for Thought: Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo-R on Japanese auctions!

An uber rare find in 2026! After these have all succumbed to overseas graveyards.
The Mitsubishi Airtrek is already a super rare car globally now as it wasn’t a very popular model nor was it one that people want to keep.
As the non performance model, it didn’t sell like hotcakes. The performance Turbo-R was good, but extremely thirsty on fuel and had the same powertrain as a Lancer Evolution 7 GTA – making it a very cheap car to snag Evolution parts from.
And such, many of these that were auctioned off and taken overseas became donors for its engines or parts to serve other countries like Malaysia. These have evaporated from Japanese shores.
Owning one within my family, I got to know that around 2024-2025, availability for the Airtrek has genuinely dried up. No more has there been any cars being auctioned in Japan, and parts have already been dried up to serve other Malaysian units.
At the time of posting, one has just popped up on Yahoo Auctions.

Its a very original one owner 2002 Turbo-R, with what seems to be the original alloys, possibly an aftermarket exhaust tip, non-degraded steering wheel, good paint and a very well maintained condition overall. The rarest piece in the car would probably be the Ralliart floormats.
It mostly likely has the X42 paint code, a common color of Labrador Black Pearl / Tarmac Black Pearl for the Airtrek. Starting at 298,000¥, it is possible for an overseas supplier to pick this up. If that does happen, its an almost full guarantee that it will be chopped up. Its a rough world.
If you would like to celebrate a random milestone, you can find the listing here.
