Penang: All love for the Honda Stream

Nothing but applause for the ol’ reliable Honda Stream.
I do have a bias, especially in regards to a previous entry detailing my family’s old Stream RSZ that enlightened me to the beng part of motoring.
Though I need to remind myself physically why these are good cars (rose-tinted glasses play a huge part in my bias), there’s no mistaking the fact that across the markets where the Stream is sold, many still run as reliable family cars.

They used to be everywhere, and they… no longer are everywhere, but somewhere. Somewhere will you still find one jazzing it out in an urban city, kampung or hitting the track if you’re lucky.
The global market 1.8-litre R18A that produces 140 horsepower and Japanese-market R20A1 2-litre engines are strictly not as meaty and prestigious as a Mercedes R63 AMG, but even the Stream is not immune to the K-series swap.
But no need for all that kick, the Stream as a package for families still remain strong – perhaps stronger than the Jade that replaced it afterwards. Or even the RSZ is a sporty package that non-sporting families can happily use.

This if the rear window is to be believed is a grey-import Japanese-market pre-facelift Honda Stream RSZ finished in Cobalt Blue Pearl. Its in fair cosmetic nick – a defaced front grille badge contrasting the red Type R trunk badge, fading bonnet clearcoat but otherwise still conserved well. Most of these RSZs when modified see the original 5-spoke alloys switched for a fancier set, but this is absolutely owned by someone who couldn’t care less about the modification scene of these MPVs.
Of course, there is also equally good things to comment on the first generation Honda Stream and Honda Jade. The first-generation lacked the D-series grunt even with a 100cc displacement bump (whose 1.7-litre affected it in many market segments for registration fees) but was offered in some markets with a 2-litre K20. And the Jade RS cut displacement in favor of turbocharging resulting in a brisk and elongated Honda Fit.

As mentioned, the Stream from first to second and the ensuing Jade (RS) are all MPVs designed for the family man in mind before the enthusiast, so most of these are still around still being used for that purpose. Here’s hoping for many more years of these sleek Honda MPVs on the road!
