Fuel for Thought: Low-priced 1990s saloons in Malaysia

Efini has a Top Gear-esque budget for a Malaysian car. Here’s two within that.

Efini is looking to temporarily include another vehicle in his parking for friends to use. We’re joking that its a Top Gear challenge since his budget is RM3,000, or about a thousand SGD. A rental costs two to three times less, mind you, but due to some conditions from both him and his group (we’re not joining), its a possibility.
With a budget looking like a Top Gear challenge, we have so far narrowed down on only two cars.
We have one of Malaysia’s national car, the humble Proton Wira.

This specification is a 1.5-litre with a manual – this variant being a fuel-injected 4G15 engine. It doesn’t make much power although it can be tuned (or made obnoxiously loud). This one already comes with aftermarket wheels (which look like 14-inch), front lip, rear lip and a EXi replica spoiler.
The cosmetics probably cost around RM300 to buy, so its already pre-riced and therefore money saved.
It has SPARCO replica seats, aftermarket shift knob (possibly short shifter too), steering wheel, pedals, air intake and a big muffler. What there is left to look at… is the actual condition than perceived. It probably has rear quarter damage judging by the misalignment, paint chips on the lower parts of the car and a destroyed center console.
Seems reasonable for RM2,600 then.
The other car is what we often cover in other pieces – a Honda Civic EJ.

This one has little information to go by apart from the fact it has a “leaking coolant tank”. Efini says this was listed for RM4,900 shortly before being relisted for RM3,300, just out of budget for him.
Its a EJ7 chassis, with a non-VTEC 1.6-litre D16 motor paired with an automatic transmission. It is already resprayed, the paint by photos still looks fair and through enough to have also painted the engine bay.
The interior is the usual used-and-abused with cutted generic floormats, aftermarket shift knob, seat covers and best of all, dirty interior surfaces. The exterior is a combination of questionable modifications with yellow foglights, fender-bumper clamps and windshield banner.
For RM3,300, its a genuine steal for a Civic platform – update; and it was, it sold the day after we wrote this.
Both cars look fair in condition but definitely need work and cleaning. We’ll see which gets taken in by Efini’s wing.
