MY Archives: Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3

Silver color palette dominates the spotless design of this Mercedes-Benz 190E.
The 190E (W201) is one of the many successful designs penned by late automotive designer Bruno Sacco, who by many accounts had penned such a revolutional design that cars designed today have taken heavy design influence from his few works at Mercedes-Benz.
This model including the W124 of its time is a global hero, being such a bestseller (with ~1.8 million sold for the 190E) in many markets that these cars are still a common sight in some countries, or widely gushed upon as a memorable workhorse of the eighties and nineties.

For the Playstation, Xbox and social media-influenced enthusiasts, the 190E is best recognized for its homologation models.
With an aim to compete against the equally coveted BMW M3 in Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) racing, the 190E saw its first performance model with the Cosworth-tuned 2.3-16, eventually evolving into the 2.5-16 and then the more limited Evo I and Evo II models, complete with outrageous wings and body panels – all in the name of racecar.
Cars in Penang (and likely other parts in Malaysia) tend to devolve into a worse for wear condition, ultimately reaching its final form of rapid rust and resting place in a bush.
This 190E challenges that narrative, probably housing a history of meticulous restoration recently in its life, given the condition of the paint and panels are spotless.

It is not clear whether Cycle & Carriage sold the standard variant 2.3 8-valve variant of the 190E in Malaysia, so verifying the 2.3 badge is not immediately possible. Although, given it is likely to be a restored vehicle, there is the possibility that a 2.3-litre engine was transplanted and registered into the car. Or.. its an upbadge.
The wheels are desirable AMG Monoblocks, completing the silver exterior colorway. The interior is a beige colorway from seats to doorcards.
Twin-exit tailpipes complete the sporty endeavor of this car, which I would believe are AMG-styled or are genuine AMG exhaust tips given the rectangular design.
This then, is a very well thought-out example. I’m not lying when I say this is making me drool..

Without exaggerated decals, full-black or in-your-face modifications, this 190E shined. It literally shined in the melting sunlight, but also shined as a huge tangent in the midst of new Proton SUVs and run-down Toyota Unsers. Perhaps its your calling – or rather mine – to start surfing the classifieds to find that dream Benz.
